Trikomo Icon Museum

Trikomo Icon Museum

The Panagia Theotokos Church, which today serves as the Trikomo Icon Museum, is located in the center of the town of Yeni İskele, formerly known as Trikomo. As the main church of the village, the building was constructed in the 12th century with a single nave and a dome. After restoration and renovation works carried out by the Department of Antiquities and Museums of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, it was opened to visitors as the Trikomo Icon Museum on May 23, 1991. Today, the museum exhibits handcrafted icons, religious paintings, wooden carvings, and liturgical objects collected from the surrounding area. With its serene atmosphere, centuries-old fresco textures, and collection of icons, the museum stands as an important cultural landmark reflecting Cyprus’s rich Orthodox artistic tradition. Following restoration works, it was reopened to visitors in 2025.

One of the most remarkable artistic features of the church is the depiction of Christ Pantocrator (Christ as Ruler of the Universe) located within the dome. This iconographic scene, traditionally placed at the center of domes in Byzantine art, symbolizes the divine power encompassing the entire space. The dome motif at the Trikomo Icon Museum is considered one of the best-preserved examples in the region, holding great significance in the field of art history.
