Museum of Barbarism
The Museum of Barbarism, opened to visitors in 1966, is an important memory site that sheds light on the recent history of the Turkish Cypriots. This single-storey building includes the “Memory Room,” “Martyrs’ Wall,” “Period Room,” “Documentary Room,” and the “Bathroom.” The museum also features a chronology display illustrating historical developments and a “Talking Portraits” section that conveys historical narratives audibly to visitors.
The most striking and frequently visited section of the museum is the bathroom where Major Dr. Nihat İlhan’s wife Mürüvvet İlhan and their children Murat, Kutsi, and Hakan were killed by the EOKA terrorist organization during Bloody Christmas. This section vividly reflects the suffering endured by the Turkish Cypriots, emphasizing the importance of remembering past atrocities and passing this history on to future generations.
